Judges in Spain are about to face an historical event, the first strike in history by judges. Goal: improvement of the judicial organization and more judges. Approximately 20% of all judges (some 800) have already made clear that they will support the strike, though that number is expected to rise significantly. The chaos within the Spanish courts has increased drastically over the last few years. As a result of a five year old girl from Andalusia that was killed by a previously convicted paedophile, the issue is getting more attention than ever. The suspect had not been put behind bars since the Seville appeal court took 2 and a half years to actually execute the sentence. The judge involved blames the administrative chaos in the court and the poor education of the assisting legal staff in the courts, and has warned his colleagues that tomorrow the same thing can happen to any of them, since things are simply out of control. The worldwide financial crisis, which hits Spain harder than most other countries, has made things even worse. This is mostly due to the record breaking numbers of mortgage executions and bankruptcies that Spanish courts are currently facing.
